I'm really, really sorry it took so long. Hope you like it, but it's nothing too exciting, more of the lead up, for what's to come.
"Caitlin, Beth is here," Mary shouts into my office.
I had just finished basic obedience with a couple and their golden retriever puppy. I loved working with puppies. Their minds were always like puddy, easily molded. At that young age they usually didn't have any major problems, just the potty training issue. It was a simple session, and I didn't have to be worry about being seriously bitten, which is always a big plus.
"Come on in Beth!" I shout back into the lobby, "Koda, Beth's here." The big white dog perks up his ears and his tail thumps the floor in excitement.
In walks a woman that is clearly pregnant. She wears purple scrubs with teddy bears on the shirt.
"There's my boy! Oh, I missed you so much," she says going over to pet Koda, who flops onto his back exposing his belly for her to rub. "Honey, you're going to have to get up, I can't reach you."
"Well, well, well. I'm not a doctor my dear, but I'd say you might be pregnant," I smile at her,"Koda, up." I say spitting out a command so the pregnant lady doesn't fall to the floor, trying to bend over and pet him.
"That's what they're telling me," she says with a smile, "Are you ready to go? I'm starving!"
"Yep. Just let me get my coat."I grab my coat from the coat rack as Beth greets the rest of my dogs.
"Alright, let's go," I say fixing the collar on my jacket.
"Are we stopping at your house to drop the dogs off?" she asks.
"Nah, I've got to come back here to pick up some paper work to take home, so they can just chill in my office for now. Bran you're in charge. I'll be back later," I say before closing the door behind me.
"So, where do you want to go?"
"Well... I've been craving the rolls from Eat'n Park for the past couple days, so can we PLEASE go there?!" she begins to plead.
"Alright. I see we're eating fancy. Oh, look and we should be there just in time to see the senior citizens eating their lunch," I say sarcastically looking at my phone.
"Ha, ha. Very funny," she replies getting into her car.
"So, tell me how your trip went," she grins and shrugs off her coat as soon as we are seated at a booth.
"It was fun. Montreal was gorgeous. I went out with all the guys and their girlfriends the night before the awards and we had a blast wondering around the city. Although I couldn't really talk to anyone,"I shrug.
"That's what you get for taking Spanish in High School and not French like the rest of us,"she laughs.
"Well, I never thought I would need French. Besides, Sid can speak some French and I had Kris showing me around too."
"Lucky, all those guys are so good looking. Ok, so tell me about the ceremony," she says sipping her lemonade that the waitress just brought, "they really didn't play much here. Although you and Sid were all over the news. They reported that you guys left as soon as the awards were given out. Why didn't you stay?"
That night flashes quickly through my mind again, along with the pain of remembering everything.
"Well, it's kind of a long story. But I took a rather depressing trip down memory lane," I say looking at the smiley face cookie on the menu.
"What do you mean?"
"I'll tell you. But not right now. It's too depressing, and I don't want to put that on you when you're about to have a baby,"I sigh looking up at her.
"Ok," she says with a very worried expression on her face.
There is a silence between us.
"So... You never did tell me... did you have 'fun' on your trip?" Beth says a grin slowly spreading across her face.
I sigh, but I can't hold in the smile.
"Well..." I begin with a smile.
"Oh My God! You did! You had ..." she squeals.
"Beth good God! Keep it down, the whole world doesn't have to know," I laugh trying to get her to be quiet.
"I'm sorry, but wow!" she can't wipe the grin off her face,"So... how was he?"
"Oh God, Beth! I'm stopping this conversation right now."
"Oh, come on! He's a big strong hockey player, they have to have a lot of endurance," she giggles.
"Well, let's just say I was more than a little sore in the morning."
"Mmmmm... I see," she says grinning, "And to have your first time with him be in Montreal, that's so romantic!"
"Are you kidding? We didn't plan it that way, we tried to before but kept getting interrupted. Plus it wasn't really our first time. I mean technically, we had had sex before, but that was a long time ago," I smile looking at the lemon floating in my ice tea.
"Hun, you only knew him since December, and he was engaged. Wait... please don't tell me you... when he..." she says looking at me astounded.
"What?! No... no..." I say rubbing my temples with a sigh, this was a little more complicated then I thought it would be.
"Beth don't you remember me telling you that I had already met Sid before?"
"Oh, yeah. You were as white as a ghost when you said you had to talk to him. Is there something you haven't told me," she asks a little hurt.
"Yes," I sigh. "Do you remember when I went to Florida my junior year?"
"Yeah, didn't you go with Jamie and all of them?"
"Yeah. Well when we were there it was pretty secluded like I told you, but there wasn't an old couple in the house next to us... it was Sid and some of the guys. They were vacationing down in Florida too before they went back home for the off season. And well I ran into Sid when I was jogging, literally ran into him. And we started hanging out, going on dates... and well kinda fell in love. Or at least I fell in love with him," I sigh looking up at her to see her jaw almost hitting the floor.
"Why didn't you tell me?" she asks astounded.
"I don't know, I guess it just hurt too much. If it makes you feel any better I didn't tell anyone else."
"But wait. If you guys wanted to be together why..."she says clearly confused."Oh my God these rolls," she sighs taking a bit of the warm roll next to the sticky bun.
"Well, I didn't exactly tell Sid that I knew who he was. We introduced ourselves on a first name basis, so he was kinda pissed when I told him I knew he was Sidney Crosby. Plus it was right after I had spend the night. He and I got into a screaming match, he told me he never wanted to see me again, and I left for Maryland 2, 3 days later."
"Hun, you should have told me. Anna and I would have been there for you in a heart beat. You always try to take on everything by yourself. I just wish you'd ask for help sometimes," she sighs.
"I know, I just have been on my own for so long now, and that was kinda where it all started," I say, finally admitting it not only to someone else but also to myself.
"And there is the root of your problem," she says pointing to me with a fork full of spaghetti.
"Alright in the house," I say opening the jeep door for the dogs.
I open up the passenger door and take out papers and files I had to bring home from work. After talking to Beth for what seemed like 15 minutes at lunch, but was really and hour and a half, about everything under the sun, I returned to my office only to find that I had much more work than I anticipated. Oh, well.
After juggling files in one hand and my bag and travel mug in the other, I manage to kick open the door.
"No, I have a 5 day road trip. Yeah then we have 3 home games. Right. Umm... I don' know Mom, I still have to talk to her about it. Yes she knows, but we haven't got a chance to talk about it. No she had to work. Yes... oh, she just got home Mom. Yes I will call you back as soon as we set a date. I love you too, tell Dad and Tay I said hi. Ok, bye mom," he says from his place on he couch, looking up at me with a smile.
"Hey, how was work?"he asks getting up to quickly kiss me, taking some of the mountainous pile of manila folders from my hand.
"Ok. How's your mom?"
"Good, excited to meet you."
I stop and stare at him with a skeptical look on my face.
"I swear, she really is excited to meet you. And I told you, it's not your fault that they didn't know about us. That's my job, not yours," he says following me into my office/study and puts the folders down on my desk.
"What about your dad?" I ask biting my lip and turning to look at him.
A look of hesitation washes over his face for a moment,"He's.. umm... anxious to see you. Don't worry, he'll love you."
"I hope so," I sigh, looking at the ground. Sid steps closer to me and puts a thumb under my chin to tilt it upward so my eyes meet his.
"I love you," he says sincerely, his eyes pleading with me for some odd reason.
"I love you too," I whisper before leaning up to gently brush my lips against his.
"Now go put your pjs back on," he says breaking away.
"What?! Why? It's only 2:30!" I say very confused.
"Well, I wanted to spend the whole day in bed with my girlfriend, but some one had to wake up early and work," he says walking out into the living room before traveling up the stairs.
I sigh. Just relaxing does sound nice, but then again I do have all this paper work. And that's when procrastination sets in. Well, I guess it is his only day off in a while, I should take full advantage of that. I smile, before jogging up the stairs to meet him in the bed room.
I wake up to incessant beeping coming from the right of me, and one body over. I groan and snuggle deeper into his warm bare chest. I feel him stir and reach up to stop the horrid noise, before tightening his hold on me with a sigh.
"Tell me again, why you have to wake up so early?" I mumble against him. I hate morning.
"Because I still have to pack, and then leave at 8:30," he groans.
"10 more minutes," I plead pushing myself tightly against him.
"Caitlin I have to get up," he sighs, not moving.
"Nuh uh,"I shake my head.
"Caitlin."
"Sidney." I mock.
"Come on babe, Flash would be coming up here in half an hour anyway to wake you up," he says, still not moving.
"Exactly! A whole half an hour more of sleep," I sigh, finally moving. I scoot up kiss him lightly on the lips.
"Good Morning," he mumbles.
"Morning," I smirk allowing the kiss to linger.
"I need to get a shower," he says quickly kissing me and sitting up in bed. He walks over to the bathroom, looking very tempting in his boxers.
"Is that invitation from a few days ago still valid?" I ask from the bed with a smirk.
He turns to look at me for a moment, a perplexed look on his face, as he tries to find my meaning. I smile at him, waiting patiently for him to figure it out. Suddenly his face lights up and a grin slowly forms, I could see the light bulb turn on above his head.
"That depends, are you accepting the invitation?"
"I thought I'd RSVP," I smile, getting up and walking over to him.
I stop in front of him, standing on tiptoes to ever so gently press my lips to his. I feel him smile against my lips before his hands go to my waist, lifting me up with ease. I wrap my legs around his waist as he deepens the kiss, making his way to the bathroom.
After a rather long shower( followed by an unsuccessful attempt to get dress, and then yet another long shower), Sid was getting nervous because he was on the verge of running late. He was stuffing everything he needed into his suitcase, as I sat on the bed and watched him, not wanting to get in his way.
"Do you need me to do anything?" I ask, finally breaking the comfortable silence between us.
"Umm... Breakfast would be great if you don't mind," he says glancing up at me hopefully.
I look over at the clock, 7:51. Let's see he has to leave here by 8:10, if he wants to be there by 8:30, and even that was pushing it.
"Alright, I'll go make some oatmeal," I say getting off the bed.
"Oatmeal?" he says looking up in surprise.
"Yeah, you know oats in meal form," I smirk going up to him and kissing his cheek before
heading to the door way.
"Smart Ass," he mumbles rolling his eyes before throwing a pair of shoes in his bag.
"So I've been told," I grin back, "Look you have to leave in 20 minutes, it's quick, it's easy, and
it's healthy. Got it Crosby?" I ask from the door frame.
"Yes, ma'am," he smiles, throwing something else into his suit case.
I run down stairs to be greeted by a pack of dogs doing a little potty dance.
"Sorry guys, I was a little preoccupied,"I smile to the pack who anxiously greet me. I open the door and they race out around me. After the last dog is out, I run into the kitchen to make the oatmeal and put on a pot of coffee.
A few minutes later, I hear Sid come racing down the steps, and I hear the door open and close telling me he went outside to put his suitcase in the car. Just as I finish pouring the coffee, the door reopens and Sid comes in followed by six dogs. He quickly sits down at my small kitchen table and studies his oatmeal.
"It's not drugged I promise," I say taking a sip of me coffee. Sweet, sweet coffee.
"I'm just trying to figure out what's in it,"he says while furthering his examination.
"Flax seed, blue berries, and a touch of maple syrup," I say taking a bite of my own.
"Hmm..." he says taking a scoop of it, and putting it in his mouth, "Wow, this is really good."
"Gee thanks," I say rolling my eyes.
"Where did you ever think of this?"
"I don't know, I've made it so many other times I don't really remember," I shrug taking another bite.
"This is really healthy too, eh?" he asks over a mouthful.
"That's what all my other hockey boyfriends tell me," I smirk, as he swallows and sticks his
tongue out at me.
"So you are coming back Sunday?" I ask, finishing my oatmeal.
"Yeah, ummm...before I forget and to prevent my parents from asking for the billionth time, when should they come?" he asks, before taking a swig of his coffee.
"That's up to you. Just pick a date. I should be here unless there is some thing for search and rescue. Which you never really know about, but ..." I say thinking to myself, "I'll be here, Sid. Just pick a date when you are home. And we can go out to dinner with them, or I can cook, or both."
"Alright,"he sighs getting up and putting his bowl in the dishwasher, "I guess I'll call my mom, and tell them when I'm getting back and they can plan from there. Does that sound ok?"
"Perfect," I smile, lightly kissing him after I put my bowl next to his in the dishwasher.
"I should probably get going," he says lifting one of his arms off my waist to look at his watch.
"I'll call you when we land."
"You better Crosby," I smirk leaning up to crash my lips against his soft plump ones.
"Caitlin, Beth is here," Mary shouts into my office.
